Position Description

After several years working with us, the wonderful Joëlle Morris is moving on to other things, so we are searching for a new Music Director! Now in its 52nd year, CODA Chorus is an all-inclusive community chorus based in Winthrop, Maine. Our goal is to provide opportunities for local singers of all backgrounds and abilities to join one another in song, to encourage the enjoyment of singing, and to raise the level of music appreciation in our community. We present two major concerts a year and frequently perform with other community musical groups and musicians. We present a variety of musical styles, from popular holiday carols to classical masterworks.  All community members are welcome without audition. 

The CODA Music Director is a part time contractual position. The following are the primary duties and responsibilities of the position.

Performance Functions

  • Oversee the artistic health and growth of the Chorus in accordance with the Chorus’ mission and vision
  • With the help of the Board of Directors, organize an annual performance schedule which includes two performances of a winter (holiday) concert, and two performances of a spring concert
  • In collaboration with CODA,  design each concert performance, including theme development; music selection; and,  integration of partner musical groups, guest artists, ensembles, soloists, instrumentalists, and visual elements
  • Conduct the Chorus in all performances and regular weekly and special ad-hoc rehearsals.  “Seasons” run from September to December, and January to May
  • Oversee the technical and production elements of performances

Communication and Partnership Functions

  • In partnership with the Board, identify opportunities to further the mission of CODA Chorus through networking and outreach
  • Assist the Board in planning and managing  communication and  logistical details for performances
  • Participate effectively in meetings of the Board of Directors and with committees, as requested
  • Maintain healthy communication with  membership, Board and community members
  • Foster a respectful, inclusive and collaborative community of singing members

The successful applicant will have:

  • College or graduate –level music education, preferred
  • Training and experience in conducting a diverse chorus with a range of musical abilities, preferred
  • A broad knowledge of choral repertoire
  • Expertise in vocal technique and production, pedagogy, rehearsal technique, languages, and choral diction, preferred
  • Experience in orchestral conducting, preferred
  • Excellent communication skills
